I would recommend doing this with at least a mining ship for maximum efficiency but I suppose you could pull it off with just a hand drill. Your gonna need to dig really really deep but eventually your ore detector should pick it up. So those Nickel deposits that look super suspect because they are not accompanied by any other metal? Yeah, that's a good spot to start digging for Platinum if you don't have a large ore detector. I am sure there are exceptions and places where it can be found by itself but I am just providing my observations. I have found that Platinum is frequently found accompanied by nickel. Most deposits other than Iron are found alongside other metals. What if I don't have a large ore detector or want to build one? You can't find the platinum because it is 100+ meters below the surface and will need a large ore detector to find it. Why can't I find it? I have scoured the surface for it and I have not even found a single bit. I was relieved to find out when they say "platinum is not found on planets" they are not referring to the moon (stupid I know because the moon isn't a planet but I wanted to be sure). To start I am making this because I myself was looking for platinum and was wondering if it got the uranium treatment in that it was moved exclusively to asteroids. This is entirely made by my own observations and I am 100% sure there are exceptions that are not listed here. **Disclaimer I am making this as a guide for those like me that had issues finding Platinum in vanilla survival. When you find an ore location it may be useful to create a new GPS marker at that location with information regarding the ore located. Some ore on planets or asteroids are deeper than the basic hand drill detector range or small grid ore detector range. Large grid ore detectors have the longest range. Ore detectors have a limited range, by default most block ore detectors are at half detection range strength. In space, with the one of the latest patches, it seems asteroids typically have two types of ores. It seems patches are at least 2km apart or more. You should be able to find 2 types of ore per location or more.
